Question #129: Dear Dan: Would you please share with a beleaguered mom how you treat blisters that come from too much skating? J.V.
Dan Replies: Dear J.V. First the preventative. Of course, skates that fit properly are a must, but I assume that’s taken care of. I wear what are called baseball sanitary socks. They are very, very thin cotton socks that come up high on your calf and their name comes from baseball - players wear them under their stirrups. Frankly, I rarely have trouble with blisters. I have the opposite problem, calluses that grow so big that they have to be “filed” down regularly.
But there are two ways to treat blisters. One is to apply New-Skin (it’s an antiseptic liquid bandage with a jelly like consistency), then a Band-Aid type bandage, then wrap the foot with pre-wrap (it’s a self-adhesive wrap – comes in 3” widths – one brand name is Coban, Self-Adherent Wrap) and then tape that closed with cloth adhesive tape (not hockey tape but the paper-thin kind). Be sure the tape is applied so it doesn’t roll or bunch up and cause another blister.
The other treatment is to apply a corn plaster instead of the New-skin, then the Band-Aid type bandage, then the wrap and tape.
Good luck and I hope this helps. Blisters can be a bummer.
